Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course has a C1 CEFR level (for all language skills: listening and reading comprehension, writing, speaking and lecturing).

  • It continues the development of reading, data gathering, and note-taking using texts or sets of texts (as started in the Introduction to English and English Level 1 courses).
  • It also focuses on research, analysis and synthesis, and report-writing capacities as well as oral understanding and presentation skills.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • analyze and synthesize English scientific literature,
  • follow oral presentations in English, take accurate notes, and synthesize them,
  • present scientific information in correct and consistent English.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

English Level 1 (taught in the second year of the Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course features about 30 classes.
Each class requires a long preparation which is essential and mandatory. There are no ex-cathedra lectures but rather language seminars in which students will be asked to take part regularly and actively.
Besides, there will be one oral presentation and one written assignment (lab report, field trip report or other, as a function of the students' orientation). These are compulsory tasks. Should students fail to do their presentation and/or to hand in their report in due time, they will not be allowed to sit the first-session exam.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The in-class course is taught to 25 to 35 students for two to four hours each week.
Together, preparation, active participation, oral presentations and written assignments during the year account for 50% of the final grade.

Recommended or required readings

Level 2 English for Biologists (2017-2018) course notes compulsory. Internet access recommended.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam in June (listening, note-taking and writing), oral exam in June (on personal readings) and continuous assessment of progress through class participation, oral presentations and various written assignments accounting for 50% of the final grade.
