Learning unit contents
1st part:
Revision of basic Dutch grammar and vocabulary. During this first year, listening comprehension will be stressed more than oral expression. The oral aspect will be developed as well, but to a lesser extent; yet, the student will be encouraged to pronounce Dutch sounds correctly. Notions of business Dutch.
2nd part :
Continuation of basic Dutch grammar and vocabulary revisions. Use of Dutch socio-economical vocabulary and texts. Students will be invited to pay attention to the correct pronunciation of Dutch sounds through exercises.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
1st part :
The student will be expected to master the basic linguistic grammatical and lexical tools in order to be able to use them actively when he/she expresses himself/herself in Dutch, and particularly in the written language.
2nd part :
The student will be expected to master the linguistic grammatical and lexical tools in order to be able to use them actively when he/she expresses himself/herself in Dutch, in the written as well as in the spoken language.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
1st part:
This course is intended for (false) beginners. Motivation will play an essential role, particularly for those without any knowledge of Dutch.
2nd part :
The first part of this module, given last year, or failing that, a good knowledge of basic Dutch or an unwavering motivation.

Three essays to be handed in during the year (cf. schedule handed in at the beginning of the year), as well as a reading file (distance learning).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
1st part :
Theoretical notions of Dutch pronunciation and constant attempts to raise student's awareness of the correct pronunciation of Dutch and of the observance of Dutch grammar rules.
Grammar, vocabulary, translation, listening comprehension and oral expression exercises.
A placement test on the first day will separate advanced students from (false) beginners. For each group, part of the course will consist in distance learning.
2nd part :

Assessment methods and criteria
1st part:
- Woorden in context : the student will be asked to study 60 words a week, which comes to about 10 words a day. The student will be assessed twice on this vocabulary : at the test and at the final evaluation.
- Test during the year : Woorden in context + Nieuwe start
- Final assessment : listening comprehension (new text), transcription, translation, written expression, oral expression, grammar, vocabulary.
2nd part:
- Woorden in context : the student will be asked to study 50 words a week, which comes to about 10 words a day.
· Final assessment: listening comprehension (new text), transcription, translation, grammar, written expression and oral expression.
- The results of the student for the first part (last year) accounts for 30% of the final mark.

Organizational remarks
Native Dutch speakers are invited to get in contact with the teacher as soon as possible (adapted programme).
Students who should be absent at the placement test will join the beginners until they can take the test.
