Learning unit contents

As for the previous level, the four language learning skills are developed on the basis of everyday life dialogues so as to make progress in pronunciation, basic vocabulary and various grammar points. After listening to the dialogue and receiving explanations, students are invited to interact:
- Part of the written exercices are done in class so as to meet all comprehension needs.
- speaking is trained through question-answer exchanges, simple conversations, role plays etc.
- listening comprehension is trained both in class and individually: sound tracks are available on Lol@ and transcripts can be found in one of the course readers.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Reaching A2+ in speaking and writing and B1 in listening and reading comprehension
By the end of the course, students will be able to understand essential communications and everyday messages relating to life and work; get by in most travel situations; speak about everyday or familar topics and describe their training, leisure, place of residence etc.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Having passed the Elementary Spanish 1 in 2016-17 or otherwise reached A2 level (ERF).

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The course is taught in Q1: 20 hours in-person teaching plus individual homework required. The course notes supplied enable them to revise class explanations and prepare exercices.  They can also check their correct assimation thanks to the corrections posted weekly on Lol@. They have to memorize the lexixon, verbal tenses and grammar points dealt with in class as well as practice listening comprehension individually thanks to the written and audio supports.

A podcast of the cours will be available by the end of the course; this is meant for students who cannont attend classes or wish to listen again to the course at their own rhythm. Please note that questions conerning the curriculum can only be asked in class (not by email).  This is a pioneering device meant to encourage questions and explanation requests to be given in class. Please note, though, that further adjustments will surely have to be made in the years to come.

Recommended or required readings

Please make sure to get the following materials from the Centrale as of the beginning of the year:
Expresión oral y textos - Elemental, nivel 2 Gramática - Elemental, nivel 2 Les pistes audio de la compréhension à l'audition seront disponibles sur Lol@.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final score includes the following three parts:
listening comprehension test (1/5): transcription and fill-in exercices on the basis of audio extracts. Part of the exam also bears on the vocabulary of the tewts see in class (translation of words or idioms out of context from Spanish into French).
Written exam (2/5) : the questions are in line with the method according to which writing is trained in class.
Oral exam (2/5): the verbal exchanges with the teacher are modelled on the oral practice developed in class.
PLEASE NOTE:
the written exam takes place at the beginning of the session and will be corrected as soon as possible so as to list those students who, having passed the written exam, are allowed to take the oral exam.
A score of attendance or absence for part of the exam automatically entails a score of attendance for the course as a whole (0/20).

Organizational remarks

It is vitally important to attend the first class as this gives out all essential information.
Every "new" student (who would not have taken Mr Alvarez' course on Elementary Spanish level 1 in 2016-17) is required to contact one of the teachers as soon as possible.
