Learning unit contents
This course continues the development of reading, data-gathering and -synthesizing, and note-taking using texts or sets of texts (as started during the first-year course English for Computing). It focuses also on research capacities, oral understanding and presentation skills.
PLEASE NOTE: APM Students have the 30 hour version of this course.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The purpose of the course is threefold:
- allow students to read, understand and discuss English texts or websites on computing,
- allow students to collect data and present it in a correct and consistent way in English (both orally and in writing),
- allow students to follow and take notes of short oral presentations.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
English for Computing (English course taught in first year of the Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science) or equivalent (e.g. IELTS 5.5-6 or Cambridge Advanced (A-C). .
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
There are no ex cathedra lectures. Each session requires individual preparation tasks which are mandatory.
Students will also be given several written assignments and have to do oral presentations during the year. Their regular and active participation in class sessions is essential and will be taken into account in the final grade.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The in-class course is taught for two hours a week from September to December.
Recommended or required readings
The coursebook Advanced English for Computing (2012-2013) is compulsory. If necessary, students can also purchase the Grammaire de Base de l'Anglais (with exercises and key) ISLV, written in French. It is available at the Point de Vue (on the Sart Tilman campus).
Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam in January including (a) multiple choice questions on a sight text, and (b) several written tasks (definitions, explanations ...).
Continuous assessment based on students' written assignments, oral presentations and active participation, which accounts for 50% of the final grade.
La présence au cours est OBLIGATOIRE. L'étudiant absent à plus de 30% des séances avec ou sans justification est irrecevable à présenter l'examen. Cette irrecevabilité est d'application non seulement pour l'examen de 1 ère session mais aussi pour celui de la seconde session. L'étudiant est, en conséquent, noté « absent » ou « excusé» pour l'ensemble du cours.
Le stage organisé dans le cadre du cursus n'entre pas en ligne de compte pour le calcul des 30%
