Learning unit contents
Introduction to elementary statistical procedures : Concept of variable, measures of central tendency and variability, normal distribution, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing and inferential statistics, chi-square tests for categorical data, Student t tests for paired and independent samples, non-parametric tests, correlations and linear regressions, and analysis of variance. Included in the course will be the teaching of the use of the free software « JASP » in order to properly apply these statistical tools.
The course emphasizes the use of statistical procedures in situations that criminologists might encounter. The content of the course therefore focuses on data analysis and exercise solving
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Analyze data from scientific studies in criminology, with basic statistical treatments and to accurately interpret the results
- Use the software "JASP" to analyze the data
- Read and understand the results of scientific studies that include basic statistical analyses
- Adopt a critical approach toward the generalization of findings from sample measures.

Basic use of a computer.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Each course session starts with a theoretical explanation of the statistical tools during the first hour, followed by a training to the use of the software « JASP » on a computer.

Assessment methods and criteria
An open book written exam is organized at the end of the course. The questions essentially involve problem solving and data analysis using the software « JASP ».
