Learning unit contents
The course is a short introduction to computer science aimed at students in life. The history of computer technology and the basic working principle of a computer are presented. Some basic concepts of programming are introduced using the programming language C/C++.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Topics of the theoretical course:
- Information in terms of bits and bytes.
- The working principle of a computer.
- The elements of programming in C/C++:
basic data types, elementary operations, algorithmic tools, function.

Practical exercises on the computer will take place in parallel to the course. The schedule is available on the web pages of the U.Lg.

Assessment methods and criteria
The examination takes place within one single session of 4 hours. It consists in writing a few computer programs (practical part, 75%) and answering a few theoretical questions (theoretical part, 25%).
A homework might impact the final cotation (-1,0,+1 on 20).

Organizational remarks
This course is normally given in the spring term of the second year. It comprises 6 sessions of 2 hours each. The practical exercices are done in the lab room of the building B22 (Labo B, floor -1). The schedule of the course and of the practical sessions are available on the ULg web pages.
