Learning unit contents

The seminar in art history in the twentieth century is for students with prior knowledge of the artistic movements that mark the twentieth century.
In general, the seminar is organized from specific questions (e.g.: "The Documenta Kassel 2007", "The writings of artists," "Art in Belgium after 1945", "Marcel Duchamp", "The artists and the First World War").
The theme taught this year (2016-2017) is communicated to students during the first semester (special session)
The course requires a significant involvement of students through  giving presentations (written and oral) and active participation in discussions held during each course.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

///

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

It is preferable that the student has already taken a general course on the history of twentieth century art.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The sessions of the seminar are organized mainly through student presentations.
The presentation themes are communicated and distributed at a special session. In this context, the general theme of the seminar is exposed and instructions for the works are given.

Concerning presentations, each student will have previously sent his written work by mail to all students enrolled in the seminar. I shall receive for my part the printed and bound written work as well as a digital version.
Each presentation, lasting 20-30 minutes and illustrated by PowerPoint, will be followed by an assessment on my part and a debate

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Assessment methods and criteria

As part of this course, the student will be asked :
1. To give a  talk (maximum 20-30 minutes) on a specific topic related to the theme of the course (mandatory topic). This should be a PowerPoint presentation. The idea is to introduce students to the practice of synthesis, both oral and written. In 20-30 minutes, he must be able to analyze a research topic in a clear and precise manner, to illustrate it in a relevant way through a PowerPoint presentation and answer questions from the teacher and other students 2. To write a report (5-6 pages excluding appendices). No plan imposed, but obligation to answer specific questions explained in the course. The objective is to evaluate the ability of the student to perform a personal scientific research and communicate the results through a written structured, clearly written and well-argued presentation. The assessment covers both the formal aspects (spelling, sentence construction, bibliography, etc.) and contents.
3. The student participation in debates after each presentation is also taken into account in the evaluation.
