Learning unit contents
Students registered in the last year of the Master programme with a specialist orientation do an internship in a company. This can be done in a private (commercial, financial or industrial) company, a parastatal or an international organization.
The internship can be done in Belgium or abroad. Ideally, students who have not done part of their course curriculum abroad will carry it out in a language other than French.
This purports to acquaint students with corporate life and management and to give them a chance to test their academic knowledge against work practices.
The students who have selected to write a project-thesis must link their internship with their project (check the final work GTFE description).
In the course of their internship students who have selected to write a research thesis, integrate into the company while carrying out a particular internship mission. This consists in dealing with a specific management issue, analysing it and proposing recommendations.
The internship mission must relate to the student's concentration area of the Master programme course curriculum.
Student interns are supervised :
- by a "mentor", who is responsible for their internship in the host company and is named in the internship agreement ;
- by an internship supervisor, who is an (academic or scientific) Faculty member, appointed to the task by the Head Officer in charge of the student's concentration area.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The key capacities developed and measured through the internship are :
- Strategy : establish a strategy in order to optimize the value chain of a company, an organization or a project.
- Implementation : take charge of the everyday management of a company, an organization or a project.
- Quality and performance control : plan and implement the performance and quality control in a company, an organization or a project.
- Communication : communicate efficiently, internally and externally, about a company, organization or project.
- Adaptability : adapt his/her managerial practice to the needs of a fast-evolving world.
Each internship is different, but, the thesis and the internship being the capstone experience of the master degree, the five capacities are evaluated during the defence.

Assessment methods and criteria
The intern is evaluated on the basis of his/her:
- behaviour towards the School ;
- performance within the company ;
- written report (written in French or English) ;
- oral defence (presented in French or English).
The jury for the defence is composed of the internship supervisor and a facilitator. The latter's attendance, though, is not mandatory.
Should the student wish for a facilitator to attend his defence, he will address this request in writing with due motivation to the Company Internships Officer.
The internship "mentor" is invited to attend the defence in order to assess the work. In case of absence, the mentor forwards his/her appraisal to the Company Internships Office of HEC Liège, using a standard assessment form.
The full rules are available on Lol@.
Work placement(s)
The search for an internship opportunity is the student's personal responsibility. HEC-ULg does not undertake to do this for them.
Nonetheless, the Company Internships Office is available for advice and guidance in this task, namely by keeping a regularly updated internships portfolio at his disposal.
