Learning outcomes of the learning unit

1) Master the basic notions of uni- and bivariate statistics. Understand the importance of a quantitative approach in geosciences. 2) Be able to make use of graphical display, exploratory data anlysis and statistical analysis tools used in geology. 3) Be able to analyse the distribution laws generated by different geological processes and to compare them to the theoretical laws available for modelling. 4) Be acquainted with the use of software tools for data processing

Assessment methods and criteria

Evaluation is based on both a written report and an oral examination. The written report will be based on exercises as seen during the semester. Its evaluation will take into account: exactness of results; understanding of concepts; quality of presentation. Written reports have to be handled over for the required deadline. Every delay will be penalized (1 point per day). Oral examination will last for about one hour, with 30' dedicated to written preparation followed by 30' of oral discussion. The oral examination will bear on all aspects of the theory. It will privilege a practical perception of the concepts rather than a pure restitution of the theory. The final mark is a composite of the oral examination (75%) and the written report (25%). Any non satisfactory written report will lead to a failure.
