Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
This course aims at giving to the students the theoretical and practical notions necessary to understand the characteristics of swell and the actions it induces on structures.
- Fluid mechanics reminders
- Swell theories
- Breaking
- Reflexion, refraction, diffraction
- Real swell
- Induced actions
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the main theories and mains behaviours of swell as well as to compute the actions it induces on structures.
Through the group project and the writing of a report, the students will develop their abilities of self-learning and application of the notions teached during the lectures, their ability to work in group as well as their capacity to structure and expose in writing their reasoning.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The course uses basic notions of mathematics and fluid mechanics.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is based on lectures, a project in group and exercises.
These activities are complementary and form a coherent whole enabling to tackle the course content from a theoretical (lectures) or practical (project) point of view.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Face to face course
Recommended or required readings
The slides of the course and videos are available on e-campus.
Assessment methods and criteria
The analysis of the written report of the project provides a note for the whole of the students constituting a group. This note is a 25% part of the final evaluation.
The report of the exercises provides an individual note which is a 15% part of the final evaluation.
A written exam on theoretical (closed books) and practical (open books) subjects provides an individual note which is a 60% part of the final evaluation.
