Learning unit contents :
In the part of the course dedicated to the medical Ethics (P. Gustin - 5 h), the structure and the functioning of the the veterinarian statutory body are explained and articles of the Code of Ethics are commented.
In the part dedicated to "Law and veterinary medicine" (B. Köhl, C. Saegerman - 12 h), the course has been structured in such a way that the students receive simultaneously an initiation to the Belgian legal system as well as the essential elements of the rules of law that they will have to respect in the practice of their profession.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
The course of medical ethics has for objective to make become aware of the necessity of respecting rules during the exercise of the veterinary medicine.
The lectures of law and veterinary medicine aim to give to the future doctors in veterinary medicine an initiation to the rules of law to which they will be under the influence during the practice of their profession. This course includes 2 parts :
First part The first part of the course is dedicated to the study of the 5 types of norms that the veterinary surgeons encounter most frequently: -) The international norms -) The laws and decrees -) The royal decrees -) The ministerial decrees and -) The conventions between private individuals
The study of each type of norm is illustrated by the statements of the rules that specifically interest the veterinary surgeons, like for example, the conventions concerning animals, the European decrees concerning education and setting up of veterinary businesses, the laws relevant to the protection of the well-being of animals, laws relative to animal health, the royal decrees applicable to these laws, the medical contracts, the employment contracts and V.A.T.
Second part The second part of the course is devoted to the implementation of the legal penalties. It includes:
-) The statement of judicial organization with a specific development dedicated to the function of law experts. -) The statement of the rules of civil responsibility, especially relevant to animals and the professional responsibility insurance. -) An introduction to the sale of animals and redhibitory defects in such sales and a -) Vague description of the law penalties

Assessment methods and criteria :
The examination- both at first and second session - to be held on dates fixed by the Faculty.
The final mark is an average of scores in each of the above two learning activities in the course, weighted by the number of respective hours unless the student received a failing grade in one of the activities learning, in which case it is the note that is reported as a final mark of the course. In the second session, the student represents only the activities for which he earned a score <10, regardless of the arithmetic average of the marks obtained in each activity.
A partial exemption is renewed the following year in case of failure of the second session.
The part of laws and veterinary ethics consists of questions MCQ (Laws and Ethics) and open questions (laws).
Regarding ethics, code of ethics (www.ordre-veterinaires.be/) constitutes the theoretical basis of the course (required reading). The documents available on e-campus summarize the important points and provide comments on the most items important Code of ethics, which were also developed during. Finally, the news on legislation concerning veterinary medicines is available (royal degree). The adjustments made to previous legislation must be known.
