Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
| Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program | ||||||||
Learning unit contents :
| The course introduces students to various aspects of literary translation, including such professional considerations as contracts. This first part will focus on fiction and literature for children and 'young adults'. We produce original translations and compare existing translations. | ||||||||
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
| A first result of the course, which should probably be a prerequisite, is a perfect mastery of French. Students will have learned how to become part of the text to be translated so as to 'hear' its voice and be able to recreate it, if need be through departures from a superficial kind of 'faithfulness'. | ||||||||
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
| An excellent knowledge of French (target language) and a good knowledge of English. | ||||||||
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| It is of essence that students should have prepared the texts beforehand. Learning proceeds from confronting different approaches. | ||||||||
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Face-to-face | ||||||||
Recommended or required readings :
| Texts are handed out or sent out beforehand via email. | ||||||||
Assessment methods and criteria :
| The students' competence in literary translation can only be assessed on works they have been done at home, namely a personal translation of a short story, an essay, a children's or young adult's book. The oral examination provides feedback on that translation. | ||||||||
Work placement(s) :
Organizational remarks :
| 2nd term in the first year of the Master's degree.
If the programme allows it, professional literary translators will be our guests. |
