| This class is designed to familiarize students with issues around the participation and representation of migrants and ethnic minorities. It focuses on two geographical areas -the United States and the European Union- where these issues traditionnally occupy a predominant place in the political agenda.
The course is made of a series of ex-cathedra lectures in which students are invited to take an active part through class discussion. Each student is expected to actively read a minimum of 2 scientific articles before each class. Lectures are given by Jean-Michel Lafleur and a limited number of external speakers. In parallel to these lectures, students are expected to work on a several intermidiary deliverables in view of producing a final paper by the end of the class. |

| This course is designed to enable students to acquire the following skills:
-critical reading of scientific literature in sociology and political science -understanding of democratic issues around the participation of ethnic minorities -ability to develop an articulate and critical discourse on those issues -ability to conduct a literature review that puts in dialogue different scientific perspectives on the same research object -scientific writing skills |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

| -prepare scientific readings before each class and fill in the reading questionnaires
-participate actively in lectures throughout the semester -submission of one mid-term paper and one final research paper at the end of the semester |

| Active participation of students to the lectures is required.
Depending on the availability of external speakers; some lectures may be given via video-conference outside of class hours (students are consulted and informed in advance). |

Students receive the list of obligatory reading during the week following the first (20/9). Students are expected to have read the first texts and fill in the reading questionnaires from the 2nd class on. |

Assessment methods and criteria :

| Evaluation is based on 3 element
1. Active participation in class readings and reading questionnaires (5 points) Students are expected to prepare mandatory readings and submit short reading questionnaires before each class. In addition, students are expected to use these readings to participate in class discussions. Students may be asked to present their reading report/questionnaire during class. Absence during lectures, failure to submit reports and late submissions will be reflected in the students' grade. 2. One mid-term essay (5 points) DEADLINE 1/11/16 @ 4PM (e-mail to Larisa Lara) Students are expected to write one short essay of 2,000 words (excluding frontpage, references, footnotes, bibliography, annex...) on a topic given to them by the Professor. The margin of variation for the length of papers is +10% to -10%. The essay will comprise adequate conceptual and theoretical discussions based on an exhaustive review of the literature. Questions or topics for the essays will be put on the course's page on MyULG. The bibliography of this research paper contains a minimum of 5 scientific articles identified via Libnet or scopus. Those references are marke with an asterisk in the bibliography in the end of the paper. 3. One final essay (10 points) DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF FINAL ESSAY (via e-mail to Larisa Lara): 8/12/16, at 4PM (no late submission accepted) Students are expected to write one short essay of 2,000 words (excluding frontpage, references, footnotes, bibliography, annex...) on a topic given to them by the Professor. The margin of variation for the length of papers is +10% to -10%. The essay will comprise adequate conceptual and theoretical discussions based on an exhaustive review of the literature. Student may include empirical material in their paper. Questions or topics for the essays will be put on the course's page on MyULG. The bibliography of this research paper contains a minimum of 8 scientific articles identified via Libnet or scopus. Those references are marke with an asterisk in the bibliography in the end of the paper. Resitting the examen Students who fail in January are invited to resumbit a new research paper (20 points) Guidelines are the same as the ones described above except that the length of the research paper is 7.000 and that the topic for the paper is selected by the professor. Deadlines for paper submission will be set in after the January 2017 exam session. |
