  • Definition of health, public health, primary care, community health.
  • Introduction to the history of public health.
  • Introduction to ethical issues in public health
  • Identification and prioritization of problems and health needs: health needs, health indicators, surveys, consensus, sources of data on health status.
  • Introduction to health determinants.
  • Introduction to health promotion and prevention.
  • Introduction to health education.
  • Introduction to Sustainable Development.
  • Introduction to planning, programming and evaluation in health.
  • Introduction to International Public Health.

General objectives


  • Learn basic concepts in the field of public health and develop an identity for Public Health.
Specific objectives


  • Knowing the evolution of health and public health concepts and take a critical review of different definitions of health and public health.
  • Make connection between different concepts integrated into the public health concept.
  • Identify and prioritize problems and needs in health.
  • Locate public health interventions on the health track built in a sustainable development perspective.
  • Identify the stages of planning, programming and public health evaluation.
  • Knowing the great quality principles for any action or public health research.
  • Identify the skills and actors in the landscape of the Belgian and international public health.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Ex-cathedra lessons and home reading assignments.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face lessons. Portfolio.
Recommended or required readings :
There are no lecture notes. A PowerPoint presentation and a portfolio of scientific papers will be provided to students on "MyULg".
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written examination with questions on the course material and on the portfolio of scientific papers. The questions will take the form of multiple choice questions (MCQ) and/or open-ended questions with short answers (SAQ).
The assessment is divided as follows:
  • 60%: evaluation on the course material.
  • 40%: evaluation on the portfolio.
The student will have its portfolio, annotated at its discretion, for this specific part of the examination.
