WARNING : 2015-2016 version of the course specifications
MATH2008-1
Mathematics: Analysis infinitesimal
Duration :
25h Th, 25h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in business engineering4
Lecturer :
Valérie Henry
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents :
The course is based on principal concepts of Calculus : real and hyperreal numerical lines; continuity, derivability, differentiation, primitivation and integration for functions of one real variable (with a non-standard approach).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
Strategy : The course will allow students to analyse the financial and economic context of a complex situation. The course will allow students to understand the scientific and technological context of a complex situation. The course will allow students to demonstrate scientific precision and a critical mind in the analysis of a complex situation. Implementation : The course will train the student to capitalize on the characteristics of a more and more digitalized world when confronted with a complex situation. Quality and Performance Control : The course will teach the students to use the appropriate analytical tools when analysing a complex management situation. Communication : The course will allow students to communicate efficiently, internally and externally, about a company, organization or project Adaptability : The course will encourage students to be curious and to show a scientific precision of academic level in their studies as well as in their professional life. The course will encourage students to be creative and self sufficient  in their studies as well as in their professional life.
Particularly, the specific objectives are

  • learning of rigor in mathematics,
  • applying mathematics in management,
  • solving concrete problems,
  • using and applying mathematical models.
The target competences are:

  • analyzing scientifically situations,
  • solving problemes,
  • modelizing,
  • arguing,
  • communicating.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Principles of mathematical reasonings ; elementary algebra, ; basic trigonometry and geometry ; theory of real numbers.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The lessons contain the presentation of the theoretical frame by the teacher and the solving of exercices and applications by the students. Some help-students and assistants are present to answer students' questions.
Two non mandatory written tests will be organized during the semester.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face completed by the contents of Lol@
Recommended or required readings :
Analyse infinitésimale : le calculus redécouvert, par J. Bair et V. Henry ; éditions Academia-Bruylant, Louvain-la-Neuve, 2008.
Theoretical notes and exercices on platform Lol@.
Assessment methods and criteria :
A written exam will be organized in January. One can pass the exam again in June or during the second session. Any new result deletes the previous ones.
