| Part One: built cultural heritage
1.1. Preserving heritage: definition - inventories - concept of authenticity - value of usage - integrated conservation.
1.2. Evolution of the concept of conservation and the concept of restoration: stylistic restoration - philological restoration - critical restoration.

- UNESCO Convention on World Heritage, 1972
- Resolution 76/28 of the Council of Europe, 1976

Part Two: gardens, sites and landscapes 2.1. International charters and conventions: - Charter of Florence, 1981: analysis and development of different approaches to the concept of conserving and restoring historical parcs and gardens; - Declaration of Arnhem, 1999 - European Convention on landscape, 2000 - Canberra déclaration on urban public parks, 2015 2.2. Garden inventories: France - GB - Belgium. 2.3. Learning outcomes of the learning unit :

| Objectives: ath the end of the course the student must be able to :
- present an understanding of the concept of heritage (built and non-built) and to define different elements of it. - draw upon charters and legal texts to examine fundamental concepts relating to concepts of conservation and restoration of heritage (built and non-built). - understand the extent of different legal and administrative protection in terms of the region (CWATUPE), Europe and the world (UNESCO). - position oneself in the context of a cultural multidisciplinary and pluridisciplinary approach. |

| Knowledge of Gardens and landscape's History (1BAP and 2BAP courses). | |||||

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
|
|||||
| Theory classes with illustrations : slides, diaporames and PowerPoint.
Visits to monuments and historical gardens.
Consultation of preliminary restoration studies. When the occasion arrises, participation at seminaries or study days concerning the conservation and restoration of cultural héritage, for exemple the Study day on the historry and future of the garden of the Casstle of Freÿr (13/10/2016).

| Lectures.
Participation at the study day at the castle of Freÿr (13/10/2016) organized by the King Baudouin Foundation. Visit to the Centre des Métiers du Patrimoine "La Paix-Dieu" in Amay with an exhibition on the work of the Institut du Patrimoine Wallon. Guided visits to monuments, sites and and restored historical gardens or where restoration is in progress. Consultation of preliminary restoration studies. |
