Legal framework
A.M. of 5.10.1995 (MB : 24.10.1995) : Ministerial decree setting out the special criteria for approving specialist doctors holding a specific professional qualification in intensive care as well as internship supervisors and internship departments in intensive care.
Presentation
This certificate, which aims to train specialist doctors to taken on any kind of failure which a patient may present, in an acute or chronic context, and from a diagnostic and curative or supporting point of view. This implies, in addition to the theory classes, that learning take place in a multidisciplinary centre dealing with the use of all kinds of life-support systems which medicine has to offer.
Special conditions of access / students concerned
This course is aimed at doctors in one of the basic disciplines: anaesthetics and reanimation, internal medicine, cardiology, gastro-enterology, pulmonology, rheumatology, surgery, neurosurgery, urology, orthopaedic surgery, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, paediatrics or neurology, who are able to practice in Belgium.
Interested individuals should contact the head of the course to discuss their application (selection competition).
Holders of non-EU diplomas should contact the Admissions Department (Certificate of Partial Specialisation Training).
Duration of the training
  • Two years of study: The full time course includes theoretical training (30 credits per year) and clinical internships (30 credits per year). During these 24 months, at least 3 months of full-time in internship and at most 6 months must be carried out at the "Centre hospitalier universitaire" in Sart Tilman.
  • The first of these two years of internship may be carried out in the advanced master in anaesthesia, resuscitation, internal medicine, cardiology, gastro-enterology, pneumology, rheumatology, surgery, neurosurgery, urology, orthopaedic surgery, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, or paediatrics .
  • Date of the start and end of the course: September to June

Assessment
Candidate's knowledge is assessed through continuous assessment by the internship supervisor and by the interuniversity examination of intensive medicine. Moreover, candidates must conduct a piece of scientific work which gives rise to at least one presentation to a national or international conference on intensive care.
