Course contents :
|
||
| This course will be a combination of theory and practice. It will deal with English-French translation in the fields of economics, finance and law (challenges, tools and methods). We will work with several EU-related texts, but will also pay attention to the private sector: banks, insurance companies, contract law...). We will use texts in different varieties of English (British English, American English, Continental English...).
The students will be confronted with different types of texts: they will have to adapt and select appropriate translation strategies. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
||
| Develop the students' translating skills to a professional level (beyond translation used as a mere language learning method).
Develop some awareness of economic mechanisms (both on the macro and micro level) as well as of various legal systems and their specific terminology. Students will preferably have an interest in these fields, but the overall objective is that they will be equipped for taking up any specialised translation. |

Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
|
||
| A good knowledge of the two languages involved and computer literacy. No prior knowledge in economics or law is required. | ||

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
|
||
| - critical reading of academic or professional articles on financial, economic and legal translation and terminology
- translation and revision exercises (prepared in advance or in real time) - editing and rewriting of French texts (up to professional standards) - critical use of IT translation tools (term banks, online concordance tools, forums and social media, machine translation...) |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
|
||
| Face to face, but necessarily involving working on computers. E-mail will be used for communication, but also for translation exercises.
Second term in the second year of the Master's degree on Tuesday afternoon, from 16.00 to 18.00 (classroom: A2 4/9 - Place Cockerill, 4th floor). |

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
||
| Permanent evaluation (work in class and at distance) and written final examination (bearing on the kind of texts we will translate during term-time).
The oral examination gives students the possibility to correct possible mistakes and is an opportunity for the teacher to explain how the translation process can be further improved. Students will also hand in a critical report on a theoretical text (to be selected in advance). |
