Course contents :

| A few weeks are devoted to a general and intensive review of the main difficulties of German grammar (declensions, conjugations, syntax...). Following this, we will go through numerous translation exercises having to do with history, art history, philosophy, etc. | ||

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of this course, students must be capable of translating a text of average difficulty. To achieve this objective, students must ensure they learn the specific basic vocabulary. | ||
|
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
|
||
| Participation in the course is difficult for students with no knowledge of German. We strongly recommend that any students with little knowledge of German should participate very actively from the beginning of the course. | ||

| One text and/or numerous sentences to be translated every week. | ||

| L. Gerrekens/C. Letawe/N. Seron : Allemand débutant-intermédiaire. Lire les textes. De Boeck 2010. (This book contains an introduction to German as well as a list of exercises to be done and texts to be translated in the course of the year.)
Recommended grammar book: N. Schumacher/H. Bouillon : Guide de grammaire allemande. De Boeck 2007. Recommended dictionary: German-French/French-German : Grand dictionnaire allemand Hachette-Langenscheidt in one volume (255 000 words and expressions) 2013. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
||
| Written exam: translation of an unseen German text. Dictionaries, grammar books and computers are allowed. June session.
The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 10% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20 (the mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20). Please note that the final exam for this course is cumulative. |
