| This course will not be organised in 2015-2016 neither in 2016-2017. Memory, History, memory coursework, competitive memory, post-dissertation... All these concepts regularly appear in the news, whether it involves a visit to certain Nazi camps, a visit to the Yser tower or during centenary commemorations of the First World War. Many questions arise : How should the political deliberations concerning the genocide of the Jews be perceived? Why should the Armenian genocide be recognized? In what way was Charles de Gaulle "Sarkosified"? Why did the former French President want "Guy Moquet's letter read to pupils"? Is freedom of expression threatened by certain "laws of memory"? What is the political significance of certain places of commemoration, like the monuments to the dead, the Eiffel Tower or certain school textbooks? Why are there two collective memories in Belgium? Why was there an attempt made to ban "Tintin in the Congo" and what was the judicial decision? All these questions will be answered in the context of course options available to Political Science students. The course aims to analyze the political phenomena linked to memory issues. Particular emphasis will be placed on the subject of memory competition. This course will be divided up into three main parts: 1) definitions of a series of concepts; 2) case studies and 3) presentations by the students on examples of collective memory mobilization for political ends. | ||||||||

| The course will make it possible to measure the importance of collective memory mobilizations in our democratic systems, to understand the reasons for these and better grasp the consequences of political positions mobilizing the past. | ||||||||

| The course will be comprised of ex cathedra lessons of one or two lectures given by a guest-speaker and presentations by the students of a very short research paper (possibility of assessment on the "Memory and Political" platform (http://www.memoire-politique.net). | ||||||||
