Part 2 : Qualitative approach
The following concepts will be covered during the course:
Epistemology of qualitative research.
Objectives of qualitative research.
Usefulness of the qualitative approach in public health research.
Indicators of quality in qualitative research.
Qualitative method/quantitative method/mixed methods: how to choose?
Sampling
Data collection methods
Analysis of data: general principles-encoding of data-thematic analysis-software programs to help with qualitative processing.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Part 2 : Qualitative approach
General objectives
The course is an introduction to qualitative research methods. It aims to explain the advantages of a qualitative approach to public health and provide participants with the tools for gathering and processing qualitative information.
Specific objectives
Students will be capable of:
-arguing the case for the use of qualitative methods; -understanding the issues and objectives of
qualitative versus quantitative methods.
-composing a qualitative sample;
-designing an interview guide for information gathering by individual or group interview;
-conduct an individual or group interview;
-successfully complete a thematic analysis of qualitative data;
-critique a qualitative research article from quality criteria defined during the course.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Part 2 : Qualitative approach
Prerequisites: PISC I and PISC II, learning the transdisciplinary approach to public health problems.
 
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Part 2 : Qualitative approach
The class sessions will be divided between theoretical lectures, exercise sessions and simulation exercises (ranging from the method choice up to the data analysis including data collection). In parallel, critical analysis of a scientific article will be an exercise.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Part 2 : Qualitative approach
The theoretical course is given face-to-face. The practical part of the course will be conducted in face-to-face but it will also bring students to work outside and at home.
For both exercice sessions, the presence of the student will be required and recognized in the evaluation.

There are no lecture notes. A PowerPoint presentation on the subject matter will be available to students on the MY Ulg site.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Part 2 : Qualitative approach
The evaluation is distributed as follows:
- 60%: written exam (QCM and QROC)
- 30%: working group
- 10%: presence at both exercise sessions
Note :
Regarding the working group, it will be based on the analysis of an interview performed within students groups. The final work is to handed in on the day of the exam. The deposit of the work is the sine qua non condition allowing to sit the second part of the evaluation, namely the written exam.
