The course will be dedicated to the film work of Werner Herzog. Within the framework of a research on the political efficiency of the cinema, such as it was questioned in the German and European political context of the 1970s, we shall deal with the apparently least "politisable" figure of the New German Cinema, Werner Herzog. At Herzog, what we can call a resistance to the politicization ensues not only from his works, often less in grip on the German political and social reality of the 20th century. Herzog shies away itself from the politicization. We are shall interest in particular in what we could call in a a little bit barbaric way an auto-hindrance of the director which, in some of his movies, approaches problems which are of the sociopolitical level, while refraining itself from a too direct reflection on its work. Therefore, his work lends itself to the crossing of multiple approaches in a prospect of teaching and research which we wish to favor. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
| The student will be capable of analyzing (at least) a movie of Werner Herzog on the basis of the approaches proposed in the course. S/He will show itself in particular capable of questioning the theoretical and analytical tools presented to the course, of identifying their conditions of validity and relevance, in the contact of an unwilling work to this type of approach. From then on, s/he will show itself also capable of making a philosophic proposal, by considering the film medium and the conditions appropriate to a thought in image. | |||||||||||
