Course contents :
The methodological questions and the review of the literature are focussed around one theme: how to improve effectiveness and equity in educational systems.
The following topics will be addressed: - Different conceptions of justice and equity - impact of socioeconomic status on achievement - gender differences - class size effects - impact of ability grouping - school effects
- compensating educational policies.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The lecture aims at two main learning outcomes, the first is experimental approach in education, the second deals with educational policy.
1. Experimental research
- Knowledge of the main results of experimental studies in education - Knowledge of the evidence and the limits of the research paradigm
2. Educational policy - Analysis of the recent educational policy reforms or measures using theoretical frames (equality, theories of justice).

Corequisite : PEDA4039-1 - Introduction à l'approche expérimentale
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
45 h. of practical activities. Usually, students are invited to participate to an ongoing research in the Service d'Analyse des systèmes et des pratiques d'enseignement headed by Professor Lafontaine

Recommended or required readings :
The reading of some chapters of M. Crahay (dir), L'école peut-elle être juste et efficace ? (Bruxelles, De Boeck, 2012) is compulsory.



Additional readings will be recommanded.
Powerpoint presentations will be made available on the platform ecampus.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written examination one part with no documentation, the other part with all documentation available. Multiple choice, short and constructed open ended questions.
