Course contents :
Urologic disorders are very common and account for 10% of outpatient consultations to general practitioners. They can arise at any stage of life (urinary lithiasis), be detected ante-natally (congenital diseases); yet, urogenital tumors account for most cases: 35% of all malignant tumors in men develop in urogenital organs. Urinary problems can also stem from benign conditions: 30% of men suffer from lower urinary tract symptoms due to the development of benign prostate hyperplasia, and as many as 30% of adult women have continence problems. It is therefore obvious that the main protagonists during this teaching module will stand beside the urologist: the paediatrician to look at infant anomalies and functional problems and the pharmacologist to treat disorders affecting the functions of the genito-urinary system.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The main objective is to provide students with the necessary pathological knowledge and techniques so that they can best act when confronted with urological problems.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Basic knowledge of the following fields is indispensable: embryology, anatomy, physiology, nephrology, and bacteriology. Advanced knowledge of semiology and propedeutics are essential in order to approach this subject.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The teaching module is multidisciplinary, and includes a majority of theoretical courses completed by practical worshops like "Apprentissage au Raisonnement Clinique" in smaller groups of students. Rotations fall under another code.
