Course contents :
This course provides a theoretical and pratical introduction to phonetics and phonology. To this end, it examines concrete examples from Germanic and Romance languages.
Learning outcomes of the course :
By the end of the course, the students will have gained
  • a better insight into the nature and structure of language, both in terms of language production and perception processes as well as of linguistic interfaces;
  • solid theoretical knowledge of and pratical skills in the phonetic and phonological analysis of speech;
  • a better understanding of the mecanisms underlying the acquisition of phonology in one's mother tongue and in a foreign language;
  • a better insight into linguistic diversity (variability and diversity of the phonological and prosodic features of speech).
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Basic knowledge of (general) linguistics, language typology and/or phonetics and phonology.
Very good knowledge of French.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course will consist of lectures, seminars and practical exercices.
