Course contents :

| In this course we will study the birth and evolution of Spanish literary realism, from the novela cortesana and its moral tracts to the novels of Pío Baroja and Camilo José Cela. We will have the opportunity to discover the novelties and progression in the 'realist' esthetics, as well as the creation of social types and the redefinition of the mimesis upon which it is founded. | ||

Prerequisite knowledge and skills :

| Level B2 of spoken and written Spanish. Ideally, students will have a general knowledge of the eras of literature and of contemporary Spanish history, as well as basic skills for narratological analysis. It would be desirable to have previously followed the course on 'History of Spanish literature' (LLR), 'Introduction to the history of Spanish literature' (LLM) or 'Études de textes littéraires espagnols' (LLM). | ||

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

| Students must write two essays during the term, on two complementary pieces of reading, taken from the syllabus. Students will also have to sit a written exam at the end of the term. Each piece of reading is accompanied by a series of questions which the students should think about before the corresponding class. Film versions of some readings will be shown outside the compulsory classes. | ||
