Course contents :
Introduction to hieroglyphic writing (Egypt, 15h) and cuneiform writing (Mesopotamia, 15h).

- overview of the different Egyptian Writings - Mechanisms of hieroglyphic Writing - Writing and picture - Reception of hieroglyphics, from classical antiquity to the present day
 
partim Mesopotamia :
- Evolution of Writing system - Origins of Writing in Mesopotamia - Cuneiform Mesopotamian system : logogram, phonogram, taxonomic sign - Language and Writing: one graphic system and different languages
Learning outcomes of the course :
- To Show the diversity of linguistic representation - To highlight the advantages and disadvantages of non-alphabetic characters from a linguistic point of view - To problematize linguistic research made from non-alphabetic writing systems.

Regular attendance in class. Reading books specified in the bibliography.
