Course contents :
In-depth reading of texts by indegenous Canadian writers (short stories, poems, play and novels).
Learning outcomes of the course :
Students will have developed their reading skills and been exposed to different cultural landmarks.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
A solid knowledge of English.

Recommended or required readings :
 
  • three short stories by Thomas King (One Good Story, that one, HarperPerennial, 1993);                
  • poems culled from Jeannette Armstrong and Lally Grauer's anthology Native Poetry in Canada (Broadview Press, 1999);
  • a play by Tomson Highway, The (Post) Mistress (Talon books, 2013);
  • two novels: Richard Wagamese, Medicine Walk (Milkweed, 2015); Thomas King, The Back of the Turtle (HarperCollins, 2014).
 
Assessment methods and criteria :
Students will have to write an essay at home and an essay in class (written examination). They will be assessed on their participation in class and on the marks they receive for these two essays. The oral examination in January will mostly consist of feedback.

The course is taught in room A1/3/22 on Monday from 1 to 3 in the first term.
