Course contents :
CEFRL levels of the course: Listening B1+ Reading B1+ Speaking B1+ Lecturing B1+ Writing B1
This course aims at consolidating the language capacities necessary in everyday life. It also aims at developing the language capacities which will be useful in professional life (answering on the telephone, negotiating, reading reports, etc). Contents of the course: - study of newspaper articles and broadcasts from TV or radio; All documents are dealing with social and economic subjects. - roleplays based on business communication activities
Learning outcomes of the course :
The purpose of the course is to consolidate and extend the students' general language understanding and use.
It also increases the knowledge of economic vocabulary and aims at developing business communication skills.
At the end of this course, the student will reach level B1+ of the CEFRL, which is necessary to attain level B2 of the KLO. The student will thus be able to understand the greatest part of dialogues and broadcasts related to social and economic subjects. He will also be able to read newspaper articles on contemporary topics. He will be able to participate actively to a conversation in a familiar situation or in typical situations related to work (telephone, meeting, negotiation). He can also explain his motivations and projects. He will be able to write a text with arguments for or against a specific opinion.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
B1 level of the CEFRL Good grounding in general Dutch language (corresponding to Level 1, 2 and 3 taught in the three years of the Bachelor's degree).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
- There is a great emphasis on oral communication: roleplays, debates, conversation tables and business communication skills. - Written exercises: texts with arguments, summaries of articles from newspapers with personal opinion. - Listening comprehension exercises. - Exercises on specific economic and financial vocabulary.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
2 hours a week during a semester
Students are asked to prepare the exercises and texts on which the course is based. Regular attendance and active participation are essential.

Assessment methods and criteria :
  • - listening comprehension test (1/4
  • - written exam (1/4)
  • - oral part (1/2)
  • All tests are compulsory. If the student doesn't present one of the tests, he obtains 0/20 as a global mark.

The course is organized twice: once during the first semester (with a final exam in January) and a second time during the second semester (with a final exam in June).
