Course contents :
This course makes up the third part of the course for History students.  The course as well as the various learning activities in class aim at activating the knowledge students have acquired in the second year, preparing them to use the English language in an active way and building up their history-related vocabulary. The class will also familiarize students with academic English and help them tackle historical sources as well as scholarly articles in English. Students must prepare actively and regularly at home for the weekly class. Active participation in discussions is necessary and will be taken into account in the final mark.  The coursebook includes the four main language skills (writing, reading, speaking and listening) as well as vocabulary in use.  Here is the detail of the CEFRL levels of the course : listening (B2-C1), reading (C1), speaking (B2), writing (B2).
Learning outcomes of the course :
- Revision and enrichment of the basic and specific English vocabulary as well as its appropriate use.
- Reading and listening comprehension: understanding texts in detail, summarizing the information, reacting to the content. - Oral expression: being able to talk about a given topic and summarize the main ideas of an article or a book.
-Written expression: being able to write, in academic English, a critical review of a scholarly article. - Occasional evision of grammar principles and rules.
-Introduction to academic English.

Students will have two hours of face-to-face teaching every week. They are also expected to work at home regularly.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Written exam: 70%
The written exam will tackle the material dealt with during the year (reading comprehension, listening comprehension, vocabulary, writing exercises and academic English)
Critical review of a scholarly article: 20%
Writing exercise on a chosen article from the portfolio
Oral discussion: 5%
Discussion of the critical review
Classwork: 5%
Active participation during in-class exercises
