Course contents :
The course has a C1-B2 CEFR level (C1 for reading comprehension and listening comprehension).

  • It continues the development of reading, data gathering, and note-taking using texts or sets of texts (as started in the English Level A course).

  • It also focuses on research and report-writing capacities, oral understanding and presentation skills.
Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
  • read and understand English scientific literature,
  • follow short oral presentations in English and take accurate notes of them,
  • present scientific information in correct and consistent English.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
English Level A (taught in the first year of the Bachelor's Degree in Sciences) i.e. LANG0076-1 or equivalent (for example: IELTS 5.5-6 or Cambridge Advanced English A-C).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
There will be one compulsory oral presentation, four written assignments and an online exercise module (+ test) in the course of the year.These exercises will enable the students to improve their knowledge by doing exam-format tasks.
Several other (self-)assessment tests will also be held in the course of the year.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The in-class course is taught to 25 to 35 students for two hours each week.
Together, preparation, active participation, oral presentations and written assignments during the year account for 40% of the final grade.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Written exam in June (reading and listening comprehension multiple choice tests + writing exercises) and continuous assessment of progress through preparation, class participation, online exercises, oral presentation and various written assignments.
