Course contents :
The first semester will be spent:
  • in part on an introduction to documentary (historical sources) and bibliographic (modern works) research in history of Graeco-Roman antiquity;
  • in part on the comment on documents relating to the classical Greece of the 5th century BC.

The second semester will be spent:
  • in part on the continuation of the introduction to documentary and bibliographic research in history of Graeco-Roman antiquity;
  • in part on the comment on documents relating to the crisis of the Roman Republic (middle of the 2nd century-44 BC).
Learning outcomes of the course :
  • Acquisition of autonomy in searching ancient documents and modern bibliography.
  • Acquisition of skills necessary to the commentary on historical documents (critical analysis and synthesis).
  • Acquisition of essential knowledge on the Greece of the 5th century BC and on the crisis of the Roman Republic (middle of the 2nd century-44 BC).

Assessment methods and criteria :
January exam session:


  • written examination: commentary on historical documents relating to the Greece of the 5th century BC.: 1/3 of the final mark.
The mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20 and the final exam will then be cumulative.
June exam session:


  • oral examination: test on a documentary (historical sources) and bibliographic (modern works) research done individually in library: 1/3 of the final mark.
  • written examination: commentary on historical documents relating to the crisis of the Roman Republic (middle of the 2nd century-44 BC): 1/3 of the final mark.
