Course contents :
This class is meant as an introduction to the (internal and external) history of the Dutch language. It deals with the following issues:
  • Basic concepts: standard language, standard Dutch, different standardisation processes.
  • Historic standardisation of the Dutch language.
  • New process of standardisation in the Netherlands and Flanders at the end of the 20th century.
  • Variation and linguistic change
Learning outcomes of the course :
1) Understanding of the different processes of standardisation of the Dutch language
2) Ability to use specialised literature in a critical manner, with a view to deepening the student's knowledge in the field.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Understanding of written and spoken Dutch. If required, this course can be linked to other curriculum courses:
Followed by: Linguistique diachronique néerlandaise.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Critical reading and presentation of the relevant scientific litterature. Analysis of examples that are representative of various stages and/or evolutionary mecanisms.
