Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
| Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program | ||
Course contents :
| General overview of the mineral resources sector. Definitions of ore, resource, reserve. Mineral production and consumption statistics. General concepts of metallogeny Economic Geology of : - deposits related to magmatic activities; - deposits related to hydrothermalism associated to magmas; - hydrothermal deposits related to sedimentary / structural features; - deposits formed in sedimentary/evaporitic environments; - detrital deposits; - deposits formed by superficial weathering; - deposits linked to metasomatism, metamorphism, diagenesis | ||
Learning outcomes of the course :
| 1) Understand the regional and local geological context of the main metallic ore deposits. 2) Be able to select exploration criteria for each mineral resource 3) Be able to establish a clear link between the ore deposit type and its mode of excavation 4) Know the geopolitical context prevailing for each metalic ore and its strategic importance in the global economy. 5) Be aware of the impact of geological and mineralogical characteristics on downstream mineral and environmental processes. | ||
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
| General Geology | ||
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| Macroscopic ore samples Microscopic examination of polished sections Commercial documents from major mining companies Field visit of a mining operation | ||
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Theoretical courses are given by modules of 2 hours. Workshops on observation of hand specimens and microscopical sections are organised corresponding to each theoretical course. | ||
Recommended or required readings :
| A detailed Power Point presentation is available through the student portal (MyULg) Reference textbook: JEBRAK, M., MARCOUX, E., Geology of Mineral Resources - Geological Assoc Canada, 2015 Recommended lecture : ARNDT N. & GANINO Cl - Metals and Society, An Introduction to Economic Geology, Springer, 2012 ROBB L. - Introduction to ore-forming processes - Blackwell, 2009 POHL W., Economic Geology, Wiley, 2011 | ||
Assessment methods and criteria :
| Written examination containing one major question (50%) about ore deposit formation and a series of specific questions (producing countries, terminology, mineralogy, grades,...).
The quality, scientific rigor and care taken in the presentation are essential criteria.
Poster presentation on a given ore deposit |
