Urban Farming basis
| Theoretical course: In the first part of this teaching, urban agriculture and horticulture will be defined. Then, actual activities in urban and suburban horticultural productions will be listed and characterized for temperate and tropical regions. In a second time, needs in urban agriculture development will be discussed (food supplying, ecological, economic and social functions) and examples will be showed trough some international practical cases.
Cases study: Students (in groups) will make a bibliographic review over one mode of urban horticulture (roof vegetalization, basement production, community garden) an imagine the development of one of them for a Belgian city, taking every aspect into account (social, ecological, economical, technical, legislative...). The conclusions of the work are presented with both a written report and an oral presentation. |

| Partim : Plant production in urban environment (1 ECT):
The novel methods in urban agriculture will be exposed, taking the harmonious and sustainable integration to the urban environment into account. The course will contain the following chapters:
Partim : Animal production in urban environment (1 ECT): Specific opportunities and challenges are linked to a harmonious and sustainable integration of livestock farming in an urban environment. The following elements will be given:

Stress and Protection of plants in the Urban Environment
| Partim - Plant pathology (1 ECT) :
Different control methods against fungi, bacteria and viruses that are adapted to urban environement will be described. These methods are based on micro-organisms, micro-organisms or organisms extracts, soft chemical control. Legislation of phytoprotection will be also presented. The methods of applications will be explain. Plant stresses due to pollution will be also presented and methods to avoid them. Trainings will also be organised in order to study and compare the efficacy of certain control methods. Partim - Entomology (1 ECT) : Besides conventional methods in plant protection, a wide range of alternatives are being developed, more respectful of the environment and human health. Among them, biological control, semiochemical and physical approaches. These different methods will be presented, as for the part of their development and for their application. |

Urban Farming basis
| The objectives are: 1. To give a global view of the production systems in urban horticulture (essentially in temperate conditions). 2. To demonstrate the complexity of the setting up of those systems, taking social, economic, ecological, technical and legislative constraints into account. | |||||
