Course contents :
Introduction to the chemistry of living organisms: structural and dynamic aspects.
Learning outcomes of the course :
General introduction to the properties of living matter at the molecular level. Chapter I. Life strategy. The living cell.Chapter II. Conservation and use of the genetic information. DNA, RNA and protein synthesis. Mutations, heredity and genetic engineering Chapter III. Protein structure. Chapter IV. The functions of proteins: two examples- Enzymatic catalysis: Serine proteases - Energy cycle: bacteriorhodopsin
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
General chemistry.
Chemical thermodynamics.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
- Tutorials dedicated to the Pymol software use: obseravtion and analysis of biological macromolecules structures. Courses illustration. Use of PDB database.

10 2hr periods

The PowerPoint presentations of the theoretical course will be available on CD as well as the notes of practical works.
