Course contents :  
The first work experience for students in speech and language pathology involves the observation of cases of developmental disorders of spoken language, written language and basic numeracy (ability to calculate). During the internship students will learn to provide help for children suffering from these complaints. The internship comprises 300 instructional hours. The intern at Master's level must perform 220 hours of training in the field and 60 hours of training under the supervision of the tutor. The student must participate in a university seminar designed to maximize the benefit of the internship work (the seminar comprises 20 hours of instruction).
The internship will be supervised by a speech and language pathologist acting as a tutor, someone chosen by the internship teachers as a group. At the beginning of patient evaluation, the tutor and the student will agree on modes of supervision. The tutor's goal is to help the student gradually take responsibility, shifting from mere observer status to partial therapeutic autonomy. Modes of student supervision and guidance should be re-examined regularly to make sure the student's goals are being realised.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Objectives of this internship are determined according to an established repertoire of skills required in Speech and Language Pathology (Cf. http://www.logoclinique.ulg.ac.be/enseignement.php). The purpose of the internship is the development of two clinical skills, first, assessing a patient, and second, "treating patients who have complaints that are part of the field of action of Speech and Language Pathology. " In addition, the internship is intended to familiarise students with a variety of resources (various skills, and proper professional behaviour) that facilitate certain skills across the curriculum, such as how to establish a professional relationship (particularly with patients) and how to acquire the expertise necessary to provide a high-quality service to patients and to society in the practice of speech therapy.

The internship is intended to insure that subjects of this nature that are taught at the University of Liège are applied in a properly clinical manner. In no case will students be asked to perform tasks that are not integral to their training.
The earliest that students can begin their internship is after having successfully completed the requirements for the "bac 3" level in speech therapy, and after having registered for Master level 1 instruction. The earliest the internship can be finished is after the second session of coursework for the first year of the Master 1 programme (end of August).
Accounting for the training hours is not left to the trainee. It is the tutor who will note the number of hours completed on a grid developed for this purpose, in order to avoid any misunderstanding or irregularity in accounting for placement hours. Students should be aware of this system of accounting for internship responsibilities, and thus avoid any misunderstanding about the rules.
An intern studying at Master 1 level may validate up to 24 hours of internship outside the university under the following conditions:
Training must concern itself specifically with speech therapy and training hours must be attested by the academic director of the intern programme;
The number of hours validated must be strictly observed;
An intern must notify the internship director concerning particular areas of training the student wishes to study, with credit for internship hours.
Attestation of attendance at training activities must be given to the internship director and to the group supervisor, and included in the internship final report.
A written report, a critical examination of the training received (3 pages maximum, including a description of training - areas studied, clinical instructors, locations - brief summary plus critical analysis) must be turned in to the internship director and the group supervisor, and then made available to other students via e-campus.

Assessment methods and criteria :  
Evaluation of the students' performance as interns (220H internship) will be based on an established repertoire of required skills. Interns must download two copies of this list on e-campus and give one to their tutor. 1) At mid-course: Evaluation of training in three stages: * Self-assessment by the trainee. * Assessment of the trainee by the tutor using the same criteria. * Consultation meeting between the student and tutor, to compare opinions and to revisit the goals of the internship for that student (may include setting new objectives). 2) End of course: A further assessment for grading purposes, and also for purposes of certification (by the teaching staff) : * Training Evaluation: same as at mid-course, above * Submission of complete assessment documentation (graded evaluation by tutor and student) by the trainee to the university. The tutor will also give a qualitative assessment of the successful completion of the internship (Excellent, Very Good, Good, S, ...). * The mark awarded by the tutor will be converted to a numerical grade (by the University teaching staff) and will be worth 40% of the final mark. For the second internship (80 hours), the assessment will be given by the clinical tutor and will be worth 20% of the final mark.
The remaining 40% will be allocated according to the internship report, marks awarded by the University teaching staff. mark. The student will give her/his report to the University teaching team, by June 1 at the latest for the first session or by August 17 for the second session. Note about spelling: if the report for the first session contains more than 10 spelling errors, it will be rejected (final note of 5/20) and must be resubmitted in the second session. Each time a report must be resubmitted, a point will be taken away from the final mark for the internship. If the report submitted in the second session contains more than 10 spelling errors, 2 points will be removed from the student's final mark for the course.

Duties of interns
  • Students shall adhere to the code of ethics of speech therapy, with regard to patients they are allowed to observe or treat, and with regard to the team of which they will be a part.
  • A student shall not go through an internship under the supervision of a personal acquaintance (family member, friend, etc.), since this might compromise the impartiality of the student's final mark.
  • Students must participate actively in all meetings of the internship seminar(s) and realize the 300 hours of internship.
  • After the first of the year, and before beginning the internship, students must complete and turn in to the service the following documents: two internship agreements for the « apparitorat » (these documents are indispensable, in order for the student to be covered by university insurance) and a service agreement (setting forth the duties of the intern and his/her tutor).
