| The course feeding systems and clinical feeding is dealing with the following species:
- Cattle and pigs : production system and feeding
- Horse and sheep: feeding principles
- Companion animal feeding over a life cycle and clinical nutrition |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| General objectives:
The lectures of "Nutrition and feeding of domestic animals" (1rst and 2nd years, and clinical training) aim to develop the following competence "Conceive, formulate and evaluate the effect of feeding plans on health and performances of healthy animals, on the quality of animal productions in livestock, and on health or sick animals seen in veterinary practice".
In the first year, the lectures present general nutrition. General nutrition course provides a foundation in nutrients, feeds and prepares students to apply nutrition principles. During the second year, practical diet and feeding plans are explained in the following species: cattle, horses and companion animals. Feeding plans are given for healthy (cycle of life) and sick animals (clinical nutrition). Practical training (exercising) is organized as 4 sessions of exercises of 2.5 h each in the computer room and a session of 2h at the experimental station.
In companion animal nutrition, the use of the ressources (tables, compendium of products, ...) is essential for the practical feeding. As a consequence, the use of appropriate ressources is also evaluated during the examination.
Finally, during the clinical training (GMV2 and GMV3), the objective is to transfer knowledge (theory) and technical know-how in high-order skills as communication with the owner to obtain a complete diet history, the study and analysis of an existing feeding plan, the formulation of a balanced diet.
In conclusion, the teaching of nutrition is organized in a hierarchy, and is provided between prerequisite courses (basic science knowledge : physiology, anatomy, biochemistry) and clinical training. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
|
| The practicals aim to apply the theoritical knowledges in order to calculate: 1) rations for cattle 2) practical rations for companion animals during a life cycle and as clinical nutrition.
there are 2 periods in the computer room of the IVT during which the students are involved in rations calculations. The practicals at the research station will be conducted by a practitioner.
The student should be able on the end of the 3 periods to balance a ration for a cow using the Alim32 software
The practical exercices are organized in groups of 10 to 14 students, under the supervision of an assistant. The resources are on e-campus. The practicals are compulsory. |

Practicals :
4 sessions of 2,5 h of supervised work in pets and livestock nutrition in the computer room and 1 session of two hours at the research station
The presence to the practicals is compulsory. The student who is missing one or many sessions will be sanctioned by a zero note for the whole practicals regardless of the reasons. The teachers will appreciate the reason for missing and in justified cases, students will be allowed to participate to another session of practical work. Moreover, if the students fail to justify their absence to practical session, or if their practical work is not complete, they will be not admitted to the exams, both in 1st and in 2nd examination session. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
|
- Feeding of farm and companion animals
Oral exam on the theoritical lectures in a total of 15 points.
Practicals : 5 points assessed on a daily basis
- Feeding of horses and sheep
After each lecture (5 lectures of 2 hours), a compulsory online evaluation will be organized during 5 days. Students who passed succesfully (mean > 50 %) this evaluations will be exempted from this part of the oral exam. |
