All year long, with partial in January
Course contents :
As the course is common to several sections of various faculties (Institute of Social Sciences, Institute of Public Health, Faculty of Psychology), an attention is granted to the diversity of the school and professional courses, but also to the waitings of students.
It thus tends to link at the same time theoretical topics (the large sociological theories which had an interest for the ageing-related themes) and concrete problems (mistreatment, dependence, active ageing, etc.)
Concretely, the course is divided in two parts. The first one, teached by the professor, aims at sweeping the field of the sociology of ageing. The second, made up by students works - in group - aims to study in-depth some specific topics (according to the interests of the students).
The topics learned during the first part are the following ones: - Intro: stereotypes on ageing - old age through the ages - large sociological currents (functionalism, phenomenology, interactionnism) - the glance of the modern theories on the principal steps of ageing (retirement, widowhood, institutionalization) - the typical case of the quantitative studies - active ageing - dependence - mistreatment
The articles studied in the second part of the course can cover various topics, among which: demographic trends, types of retirement, problems of the older workers, representations of ageing, dependence and oldest age, migrant worker, sexuality and ageing, life in nursing homes, suicide of the elderly people, ageing for female, intergenerational relations...
Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of the course, the student will be able to remember and will have understood the main sociological and theoretical concepts met.
Especially, he will have acquired a critical glance on notions such as the dependence of elderly people, the older workers, the representations of old age...
He will be able to argue on these topics.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
None
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The theoretical course will use in particular the following methods: - presentations ex cathedra - framed debates - outside contributors
The practical course will consist, for the students grouped by 2 or 3, to read, summarize, criticize (according to the concepts seen in the first part) and present to other students an article from approximately 20-30 pages.
A slideshow will be produced by the group as well as a summary (3 pages) of the presentation (including the summary and the critic of the text)
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Two hours course each week, at the first semester  (theory) and at the beginning of the second semester (practice).
Recommended or required readings :
Course notes (slides) available after each course on My ULg and readings folder (articles by Caradec V., Gaullier X., Guillemard A.-M., Vrancken D. and other scientists).
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written work (oral presentation), cfr topic "Planned learning activities and teaching methods") and oral examination. Each part applies for one half of final cotation. The cotation of group works will not be communicated before the final examination.
Group works will be evaluated without distinction between the students (excepted in case of an obvious difference of implication) on the quality of the work of analysis (summary and criticism of the text), on the quality of the oral transmission (presentation to other students). As well written documents as the oral presentation are evaluated.
The examination relates to the two parts (the one presented by the teacher and the one presented by the students). Concerning the matter presented by the teacher, the contents of the slides and the concepts developed orally are concerned with the evaluation. Concerning the matter presented by the students, the contents of oral presentations and the documents given by the students (after approbation by the teacher) constitutes the base of the examination (not the original texts).
The students are evaluated on their restitution and their comprehension of the course, but also on their capacity to put in prospect the concepts seen, to bring personal examples, or a critical glance.
