Course contents :

| The first part of the course presents some basical concepts of general epistemology and an introduction to explanation in social sciences.
The second part is dedicated to lectures by research fellows who present some of the main theoretical frames in social sciences. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| The main goal of the course is twofold :
- render students sensible to questions of conditions of validity of a social knowledge and to the relations between social theorists knowledge and lay people knowledge.
- make students conscious of the diversity of explanations in social sciences. |

| A basic knowledge of great theoretical questions in social sciences |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

| The first part of the course will consist in ex-cathedra lessons illustrated by slides. The second part will be given as lectures by research fellows.
For those seminars, students will have to read texts in advance and participate to the general discussion. They will have to write (in groups) a list of questions and remarks that will be transmitted at least one week in advance to the lecturer. |

| The course is based on the following book
Jacquemain M., Frere B., Epistémologie de la sociologie. Paradigmes pour le 21 ème siècle, Bruxelles, De Boeck, 2008
There will be written notes for the introductory part. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
| Evaluation will be based on an oral examination. Students will be interrogated on :
- the first part of the course (syllabus)
- four chapters they will have to choice among the different chapters of the book of epistemology (Jacquemain & Frère see above).
- clarity of argumentation
- use of correct formulation
- capacity to make use of notion in order to reason further. |

| Epistémologie des sciences sociales - Introduction |
| Le syllabus comprend deux grandes parties :- la première voit les grandes notions de l'épistémologie générale (explication, vérification, intervention) et leur application dans les sciences sociales en distinguant trois logiques explicatives de base : causale, intentionnelle, fonctionnelle.
- la seconde partie illustre ce pluralisme explicatif à travers l'exemple de l'inégalité des chances scolaires |
