| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Bernard Pochet |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |

Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the first semester, review in January |
Course contents :
| Being information literate (from the identification of an information need to the good use of appropirate information) and having a thorough knowledge of the basic principles of scientific communication are essential in a training process and in long-life learning.
The course aims to (i) render postgraduate master students autonomous in their information search (literacy research methodology, selection of relevant data, and critical appraisal) and (ii) enable them to master scientific communication principles. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| At the end of the training, students will be able to:
- make the student able to find its place as a reader and as an author in the network of scientific communication;
- make the student able to control some sixty key concepts in information science and documentation, concepts which are mandatory in his documentary practice;
- make the student able to access information independently (choice of topic and terminology, tool selection, use of tools, obtaining primary documents);
- make the student able to adopt the necessary critical and ethic attitude with the multitude of informations sources;
- make the student able to synthesize and organize the information obtained and able to cite and write a bibliography.

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| There are no prerequisites, but a fairly good knowledge of scientific English and computer literacy are advantages. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| The course is sheduled in 7 two hours sessions. The first lesson is an introduction and a presentation of the general frame. It is organized in five modules (sessions 2 - 6 which combine theoretical and practical activities). The last lesson is organized to perform the synthesis of knowledges. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Education is given under form of blended learning (combination of campus based teaching and online lessons) and of flipped classroom. With readings and some exercises and drills, the students discover contents individually. These contents are then shared during lessons and then implemented via individual or in group practicals. |
Recommended or required readings :
| The course is organized around the reference textbook: "Lire et écrire la littérature scientifique".
The course material (lectures and exercises) and the five modules are on-line accessible on the "supports" site infolit.be |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| The course is assessed by a practical synthesis homework.
Student must perform a full bibliographic research by putting into practice the method introduced in the course. Beginning with an initial question in touch with the special master thesis, the student must give an answer to the asked question, justify and explain his information retrieval methodology (documentary question, vocabulary, equations, tools) and justify the choice of the selected sources (quality, pertinence).
The homework must be deposited on December 15th, 2014 (PDF file sent by mail to the teacher).
It is defended by the student during an oral exam (session of January, 2015). |
