(...) .In order to be called competent in all the most basic aspects of this specialisation, the orthophonist must really be a master of local language and possess a high level of expertise regarding the most complex and technical aspects of treatment of linguistic problems, knowledge of the complexity of this field and its procedures, which in some respects go above and beyond that which is expected of other professionals."

Mastery of the French language is included in these basic skills for professional practice in speech therapy. This course has two main objectives:
1) Understanding the importance of written French in speech therapy studies and for eventual professional practice;
(2) Doing remedial work if necessary in spelling, vocabulary and grammar; |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| Upon completion of the course, students should have reached a level of mastery of their language that is sufficient so that they will be able to treat patients in speech therapy. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| None |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| The course is based on the principle of self-teaching and face-to-face instruction. A course of instruction based on a list of required skills in the French language has been posted online. More than 700 online activities have been posted or created in order to concentrate on two main skills: reading and writing. At the beginning of the year, diagnostic tests (6 oct.14) will be administered online to students in order to help them identify their own strong points and weak points as regards mastery of the language. Results of these diagnostic tests make it possible for each student to have a personalised course of study that includes a range of activities selected from the list of activities. Students must complete 70% of the activities selected for him/her in order to be able to take a qualifying exam in January. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| The course takes place online.
Four classes (20/10; 10/11 ; 24/11 ; 8/12) are required. There will be an informational class meeting at the beginning of the year (29 sept from 10 to 12 AM).
Two forms of online help are provided:
1) A course on e-campus that includes organisational information about the course (bibliographical references, help forum, etc.) and information regarding self-monitoring of progress (diagnostic tests, class assignments online) :
2) A course on GIC (Gestion informatisée des competences = Computerised skills management) is available at: http://www.labset.ulg.ac.be/GIC/ which includes all online learning activities. |
Recommended or required readings :
| Recommended readings : Fayol, M. & Jaffré, J.-P. (2008), Orthographier. Paris : PUF. [Introduction+ chapters 6 to 13].some references are available in the e-learning course (see e-campus) |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| Four-part written examination:
- a series of questions to demonstrate mastery of the French language (vocabulary - syntax - orthography ) in the form of a QCM with degrees of certainty;
- an exercise for error detection ;
- a dictation;
- a written production
Students must pass every one of the four parts of the exam. There are no partial exemptions or dispensations (except for the written production).
Students who have completed 70% of the activities recommended for them based on diagnostic tests can take an examination to earn an exemption or dispensation in January. Students who receive a mark of 10 or better can receive that mark in the June session, and are excused from the examination. In other cases, students will take the examination in the first session and/or the second session.
The steps for passing the examination to earn a dispensation (January), the examination in the first session (May/June) and in the second session (August) are the same. At the examination, students must present a student ID card from ULg and an ID card. |
