Proposed issues in 2014-15.


  • Environmental enrichment and animal welfare: impacts on various behavioral and cognitive aspects (animal welfare and enrichment).
  • Personality or temperament in fish (assessment in laboratory).
  • Associative learning in fish.
  • Social learning in fish.
  • Cognitive deficits observed in parkinson disease and animal model (translational research).
  • Spatial memory assessment in mice (instrumental and operant techniques; potential pitfals).
  • Touchscreen use in mice and nonspatial memory.
  • ...
These issues are in relations with current or planned research in several modules (Neuroscience and Behavioral Pharmacology; Neuropsychopharmacology; Ethology).
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Being able to quickly draw up the theoretical context of the chosen issue.
Ultimately, there is always for the psychologist, an issue needing a behavioral and/or a cognitive assessment. How the assessment is practically realized in animal subjects? How are the behavioral aspects operationaly measured?
Being able to present an experimental design and understand its pros and cons.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Personal work and oral presentation.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Written report and oral presentation.
Recommended or required readings :  
The bibliographical research constitutes the first step of this work.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
In consultation with the teacher, elaboration of an oral presentation and realization of a written report.
Evaluation of the quality of :
  • the definition and presentation of the chosen issue.
  • the definition of the various assessed behavioural and cognitive aspects (taking into account the potential difficulties and pitfalls).
  • putting on the white coat of the researcher, the ability to formulate an experimental strategy.

The deadlines for the written report delivery and for the oral presentation will be defined with the students.
