| PEDA0068-2 | Introduction to computerised processing of quantitative and qualitative data

| Duration : | 15h Th, 15h Pr |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Etienne Vandeput |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the first semester, review in January |
Course contents :
| The course consists firstly in a particular approach of information processing. This approach helps discovering computerised tools for quantitative and qualitative data processing with an efficient use perspective. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| The main goal for the student is becoming able to assess relevance and efficiency of digital tools for data analysis.
To reach that goal, a right mental representation of information processing is necessary in order to quickly identify its strengths and weaknesses.
We have also to focus on modelling options and work structuring. That is why students will have to control some fundamental functionnalities in a use efficiency perspective.
Knowing digital tools in detail is not a goal in itself. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| No prerequisites except a regular use of graphical work environment and software. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| Mixing concepts discovery and reflections, theoretical sessions will allow the students to carry out numerous exercises provided afterwards. Students will be supervised during the practical work. They will have the opportunity to go on working home and they will get solutions just before the next session. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Practical work will follow a more theoretical presentation within a session of three hours. Students will make use of their personal computer. |
Recommended or required readings :
| A document will be provided at the end of each course. All together, the documents will constitute a textbook. The old and complete version of that textbook can already be downloaded from the ecampus (Blackboard) LMS. |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| The final test includes two parts.
A written test (MCQ) will assess knowledge and good practice linked to the discovered tools. Some examples will be provided.
During the oral test, the student will have to proove he/she understands well how works information processing in order to use its tools in an optimal way. To help preparing this test, he/she will get a list of questions covering the topic. |
Work placement(s) :
| |
Organizational remarks :
| Students personal computers will be equiped with a spreadsheet program. A free and open source version downloaded from the Web will be enough. Another software will have to be downloaded during the semester.
Students getting problems with the use of a personal computer are intended to inform the teacher. A solution will be found. |
