Garden history and evolution

A general overview of the history of gardens from Antiquity to the present day with particular attention paid to the main European styles and the associated creators, in particular: - the Italian Renaissance garden; - the French Baroque garden; - the 18th century English garden and its adoption on the continent; - the 19th century landscaped garden and its urban developments; - 20th century trends.

Diagnostics and water systems

Physiology of the tree. Notions of growth, development, architectural unity. Methodology and role of diagnostics. Managing impacts and conflicts in urban environments and with the built heritage. Care and regeneration techniques.

Management planning and maintenance

Illustrated study and analysis based on the Charter of Florence using different case studies. Current theories in terms of inventories, conservation and restoration of historic gardens. Intervention techniques: archaeology (non-destructive and destructive), ground investigations and studies prior to restoration with a file analysis.
Introduction to management plans.

Learning outcomes of the course :
Garden history and evolution

Acquisition of knowledge required to understand : - the evolution of the concept of 'garden' from Antiquity to the present day; - the relationship between architecture and garden; - methods and styles of composition; - specialised vocabulary of the discipline.

Diagnostics and water systems

Introduction to the physiology of the tree (growth and development) leading to: - the role of diagnostics - the question of the usefulness of our botanical heritage - the conflicts between botanical heritage and built heritage - the possibilities of intervening to protect and preserve the botanical heritage

Management planning and maintenance

A study of the Charter of Florence - which defines the garden as a living monument - allows us to understand current theories in terms of the conservation and restoration of historic gardens and to address the specific problems related to the conservation and restoration of architectural and plant heritage. Demonstration of intervention techniques (soil investigations, diagnosis and lab studies), introduced to different disciplines addressed by preliminary studies enabling the historical, plant and landscape evolution of a site to be understood and to understand the garden as an entirely anthropized space. The analysis of restoration projects (in Belgium and elsewhere) is the opportunity to address the issue of preliminary studies and to establish management plans in the context of working in a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary team.
