MATH0058-2  Mathematics for management engineers : part I

Duration :  80h Th, 25h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelier en ingénieur de gestion7
One-year preliminary programme leading to the Master in Business Engineering7
Lecturer :  Pascal Dupont, Valérie Henry
Coordinator :  Pascal Dupont
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
All year long, with partial in January
Course contents :
There are two parts :
1) Calculus : real and hyperreal numerical lines; continuity, derivability, differentiation, primitivation and integration for functions of one real variable (with a non-standard approach), numerical sequences and series, numerical analysis.

2) Linear algebra: algebra for vectors and matrices; linear systems; vector spaces, linear maps; characteristic values and vectors; diagonalisation ; quadratic forms (without and with constraints); application topigs, among: Markov's chains, generalized inverse, linear programming, theory of games.
Learning outcomes of the course :
According to the ILO's of the bachelor in business engineering program, the student will globally learn to use mathematical tools to solve management problems. Particularly, the main objectives are
  • learning of rigor in mathematics,
  • applying mathematics in management,
  • solving concrete problems,
  • using and applying mathematical models.
The target competences are:
  • analyzing scientifically situations,
  • solving problemes,
  • modelizing,
  • arguing,
  • communicating.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Principles of mathematical reasonings ; elementary algebra, ; basic trigonometry and geometry ; theory of real numbers.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
In the first part of the course, devoted to the calculus, the lessons contain the presentation of the theoretical frame by the teacher and the solving of exercices and applications by the students. Some help-students and assistants are present to answer students' questions.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face.
Semester 1 : calculus.
Semester 2 : linear algebra.
Recommended or required readings :
Analyse infinitésimale : le calculus redécouvert, par J. Bair et V. Henry ; éditions Academia-Bruylant, Louvain-la-Neuve, 2008.

Algèbre linéaire, par J. Bair ; éditions de l'Université de Liège.

Exercices on the site LOLA.
Assessment methods and criteria :
First session : The marks $N_1$ (over 20) for the calculus part result from a written exam organized in january and/or in june, including theory, exercises and problems. The marks $N_2$ (over 20) for the linear algebra part result from a written exam organized in june, including theory, exercises and problems. The final marks $N$ for the first session are computed according to $N= \left(\frac12-\frac{\abs{\min(N_1,N_2)-5}-\abs{\min(N_1,N_2)-8}}6 \right)\times\min(N_1,N_2)+ \left(\frac12+\frac{\abs{\min(N_1,N_2)-5}-\abs{\min(N_1,N_2)-8}}6 \right)\times\frac{N_1+N_2}2$. (This formula is explained and commented on the website of the course.)
Second session : A written exam includes both parts of the course. Let $N'_1$ (resp. $N'_2$) be the marks for the calculus (resp. linear algebra) part; the final marks $N'$ for the second session are computed according to the same formula as above.
