Course contents :
|
| This course will deal with the linguistic nature of language and generic traditions by focussing particularly on characteristics (compositional, syntactic and typographic etc.) that are specific to the Hispanic world.
We will study the rhetorical and stylistic differences between a large number of linguistic documents in modern Spanish: scientific articles, public articles, reports, political speeches, editorials, professional correspondence, etc. We will finish by looking at the particular status of literary texts and their relation to the real world.
This course aims to be meta-reflexive, but also to be solidly practical because it will be structured around a series of document analysis and writing tasks which will be the subject of an individual and/or collective assessment.
The principal objective of the course is to form competent expository and argumentative text-writers in Spanish; writers that are sensitive to the semantic richness of words and the flexibility of syntax; writers who are aware both of the radical heterogeneity of current texts and the fact that the production of a concrete text should satisfy a series of culturally-determined expectations.
At the end of term the student will have carried out an in-depth analysis of a considerable range of documents. These can be used (cautiously!) as textual templates during his or her professional career; he or she will also have developed a critical approach to current authentic texts and will be capable of solving possible problems of structure, register and pragmatics in the Spanish language. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of the course the students will be able to :
- describe and recognize the main formal topics and characteristics of fundamental non-literary argumentative-type text genres within the Hispanic tradition.
- to produce (and explain!) complex pragmatic readings of non-literary texts in Spanish
- to demonstrate his or her grasp of metalanguage making it possible to rationalize and evaluate technical and literary works.
- to demonstrate his or her grasp of metalanguage making it possible to rationalize and evaluate technical and literary works in Spanish.
- formulate reasoned, circumspect and ordered judgments about technical and literary texts.
- prove a C1 level in written and spoken Spanish.

| Written exercices, discussions. Students are expected to produce and correct different kinds of text. |

Assessment methods and criteria :

| Continuous assessment. Written exercises. Oral participation will also be taken into consideration for the final mark and will be worth at least half of one mark. |
