Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
The theoretical part of this course will focus upon:

  • the definition of synchronic linguistics;
  • the parameters of the fields of phonology, morphology and immediate constituent grammar;
  • the inventorising and classification of basic operational relationships at each surveyed level;
  • the characterisation of classes of elements.
The practical part (active part) of the course will familiarise students with the concepts covered in the theory course and will assign exercises. Small groups of students, who will have studied specific linguistic material in advance, will lead debates/exercices. See below (Planned learning activities...)
Most analyses will focus on the French language. Data from other languages will also be used as illustrative materials.
Learning outcomes of the course :
By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate understanding and knowledge of the basic concepts of phonology and morphosyntax covered in the class. Students will also be able to identify phenomena that remain problematic wrt this analysis framework.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Grammatical analysis capabilities are strongly advised.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Theoretical lessons with exercises and oral presentations (by students).
Students will investigate the sample data before they are taught the theoretical notions that show how linguistics handles the observed phenomena.
During an active session, small groups of students will be in charge of debates/exercises on the analysis of specific materials. After the active session, the teacher will gather the results of the procedure, correct mistakes and complete the explanations.
Therefore, the stress is on debating, on reflexivity and analytic procedures. Students are required to be able to account for the process that lead them to teir personal analyses, rather than to provide a mere solution.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
See : http://cipl82.philo.ulg.ac.be/horaires
Recommended or required readings :
Exercises will be downloadable.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written examination (80%). The quality of the participation will also be evaluated (20%).
Please note that you are required to be present on the day you are in charge. Any unjustified absence or delay will result in failing the practical part (20%).
