Course contents :  
The student is introduced to historical linguistics of French by a course of historical phonetics (study about the changes of the sounds composing a word from his birth up to now).
Learning outcomes of the course :  
To know the main mechanisms of evolution of the sounds and to be able to reconstitute the phonetic evolution of french words.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
None.

  • Phonetic exercises.
  • Exercises on WebCT .
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Friday 3 p.m-5 p.m. (sem. I); 2 p.m.-4 p.m. (sem. II).

Written examination. See french version.
For "Bloc 1" students, the mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 40% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20. The mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20 and the final exam will then be cumulative.
