Course contents :

| This year, the course will explore the theme « The French novel and the History : From the victory of 1918 to the defeat of 1940. Drieu La Rochelle, Aragon, Malraux et Sartre ». It will aim at studying, in the novelistic production of these four major writers of the XXth century, the way the fictional narratives have dealed with the contemporary history. This interrogation will be historic and political as well as aesthetics, answering a double question : what the novel has to say about this historic moment and which are the formal means that it used to make it ? A list of readings will be supplied in the beginning of the course. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| The objective of the course is to confront the history of the French novel (and more precisely the history of the French novelistic aesthetics) and the political and social history of the second half of the XXth century. At the end of this course, the student will be able to think of the relationships between the change in literature and the sociopolitical transformations. At the end of the course, the student will also be able to operate a «historicisante» reading of the texts. |
